A Werewolf Boy′ Goes Up While ′The Peach Tree′ Falls Down 2012-11-12 20:00 l CJ E&M enewsWorld Lee, InKyung Translation Credit: Erika Kim Two films that premiered on the same day are now going down two very different paths. Those two films are A Werewolf Boy, which stars Song Joong Ki and Park Bo Young, and actress Ku Hye Sun′s first piece as a director, The Peach Tree. A Werewolf Boy has managed to gather more than 3 million to its screens in just 11 days since its premiere, but The Peach Tree is in danger of being removed from theaters at the same time. When A Werewolf Boy premiered, it gathered much attention for its cast and its fitting mix of romance and fantasy. According to the Korean Film Council′s Compiled Ticket Computer Network, the film drew 535,721 people to its 855 screens on November 10 alone, and recorded a 3,065,424 audience in total.
Its love story between a werewolf boy and a girl who has locked herself away from the world has even been drawing a bigger audience with time. It seems the film will even soon pass the 5 million mark, despite its competition with such giant Hollywood films as 007 Skyfall and Upside Down. The Peach Tree also gathered much interest when it first premiered.
It was made available in a whopping 200 screens across the country, but the numbers for its first day were devastating. In the ten days it′s been in the box office it barely gathered 32,000 people, and on November 11 the number of screens showing the film dropped to a mere 18. It advertised its star-studded cast featuring Ryu Deok Hwan, Cho Seung Woo and Nam Sang Mi, but audiences didn′t budge, and though Gu Hye Sun wrote a compelling story which depicted Siamese twins as ′monsters′ who Nam Sang Mi helped venture out into the world, it failed to have audiences relate to it. Moviegoers who saw the movie commented, 'The items were creative, but the dialogue and the situations were awkward and unrealistic' and 'Gu Hye Sun′s characteristic world view was confusing.'
An official said about A Werewolf Boy, on the other hand, 'As Song Joong Ki has been becoming more and more popular, A Werewolf Boy has also been gathering even more interest,' and also said that A Werewolf Boy has gathered even more people in its second week than its first, adding, 'The fresh and tightknit story, as well as the directing and the actors′ skills will lead to yet another giant success. Song Joong Ki’s ‘Werewolf Boy’ draws 1.3 million moviegoers the second weekend Movie ‘Werewolf Boy‘ starring Song Joong Ki and Park Bo Young drew 1.3 million moviegoers in its second weekend at theaters. According to the Film Council, ‘Werewolf Boy’ drew 1,333,859 moviegoers in its second weekend (November 9th through 11th), resulting in a cumulative figure of 3.604,033 moviegoers drawn to see the movie so far. ‘Werewolf Boy’ premiered on October 31st and has been keeping the top spot at the box office since.
It has dispelled any formula that may have applied to the off-season box office success previously, drawing 1 million moviegoers in just 5 days, then 2 million moviegoers in 9 days, and then in just 11 days on November 10th broke through the 3 million moviegoer barrier. The rate at which ‘Werewolf Boy’ broke through the 3 million barrier is 16 days earlier than ‘Architecture Theories’ (aka, ‘Architecture 101′) was able to achieve eventually reaching out to 4.1 million moviegoers and 10 days earlier than ‘All About My Wife’ which has drawn a total of 4.58 million moviegoers. It is also interesting to see that the number of audiences for the film has increased in the second week compared to the first week. It remains to be seen whether ‘Werewolf Boy’ will be able to set a brand new record among Korean melo-movies.
